The Witchery
Mini-Post
Just like I try to find a high point to hike in every place I travel to, I also try to have at least one night where I dress up and go to a nice restaurant. It’s not always possible when I’m on work travel, but when I get to travel with my husband, it’s a must.
Because we do most of our traveling together during Christmas time, we can usually find some pretty unique places with fabulous menus specific to the holiday. And let me tell you, I’m about to let you in on the best kept secret in romantic dining - The Witchery by the Castle. Do yourself a favor and look at their website, it’s decadent and romantic and just every bit the gothic castle dream.
On Christmas Eve we put on our best and strolled down the dark cobblestones of Castlehill and found our way to the Witchery. It was honestly everything I’ve ever wanted in a date night. It is located in a sixteenth century building called Boswell’s Court. The walls are covered in tapestries and dark wooden panels and everything is lit completely by candlelight. Honestly, I would come back for the atmosphere and the fabulous service alone, but the food was exquisite too.
The company wasn’t half bad either. We laughed and drank and ate and chatted with our lovely server and generally just had the best of Christmas dates.
When we finally forced ourselves to leave we took a stroll to see the castle at night, all lit up in red light and we even had the courtyard pretty much to ourselves. As we wandered hand and hand through the cold and beautiful night, we found ourselves in a hidden little area called Advocates Close. Within the close there is an old Victorian pump house that has been converted into a bar & kitchen called Devil’s Advocate.
Since we found ourselves at Devil’s Advocate well past when their kitchen closed, I can’t speak to the food. But the drinks were just lovely, the service even more so and the atmosphere was what I can only describe as merry and bright. We made our walk home just as Christmas Eve turned to Christmas Day, full, happy and feeling as lucky as any a pair can hope to be.
